Project Engineer, Associated British Ports (ABP) Port of Southampton

Employed in the Southampton Office of ABP in a team of Engineers delivering various projects in the Southampton Dock estate as listed below.
In addition to the delivery of these projects, I reviewed and developed the start-up and handover phases of the group Project Processes, and supervised the creation and maintenance of the port master plans.

August 2017 – January 2020 E208 Warehouse £22M
The existing tenant, Import Services, based at 20 gate warehouse (previously extended in one of my earlier projects) approached ABP for provision of a second warehouse of similar capacity on the same site.
I worked with the customer and commercial team to develop the concept design for an 18,500sq.m warehouse.
I assembled a design team using consultants to develop the designs to meet the needs of the operation and planning conditions including the sustainable development target of “excellent” BREEAM certification. I managed the Tender process to OJEU (public utilities competition) regulations and engaged the Principal Contractor. I worked with the executive to make informed decisions and to put in place the commercial agreements.

March 2014 – December 2017 Berth 103/104 Cool Store Refurbishment £8.4M
This project required the development of a scheme for an existing cool storage warehouse to be refitted with new equipment and facilities and the replacement of 4 quayside cranes with two new mobile harbour cranes.
I explored a number of concepts for feasibility and safe operational arrangements with the ABP management team, developed the design and scope, developed the business case and estimated costs, invited tenders, administered the contracts, delivered the completed project and handed the facilities over to the operators and maintenance teams.

April 2015 – February 2018
King George V (KGV) Container Terminal Expansion £4.2M and Bulk Cargo £1.6M

An area of land adjacent to the KGV Dock (opened 1934) was identified for redevelopment to meet growing demands for storage space from the container terminal operator. ABP wished to continue to serve the bulk cargo operators using the available space.
I commissioned a detailed site investigation to develop the design and establish an appropriate extent of works. I developed a scheme of pavement replacement, which included demolition of the existing warehouse, new high mast lighting, drainage, services and a bulk cargo retaining wall. Adjacent to the KGV dock, a piled structural slab was constructed to provide support for the 450t mobile harbour crane to travel on.
I managed the design of all the works and the construction of the bulk cargo area, and acted for ABP as the client for the works on the Container Terminal extension. I invited tenders, administered contracts, delivered the completed projects and handed them over to the operators and maintenance teams.

February 2015 – February 2018 Scour Remediation £290k, £250k, £80k
The sea bed adjacent to the quayside wall is occasionally scoured to a depth that threatens the stability of the quayside as a result of the action of bow and stern thrusters used predominantly by large cruise ships and container ships.
I monitored and assessed the progression of scour holes using bathymetric surveys and planned appropriate intervention and remediation works using a risk based approach. I estimated costs and invited tenders, administered the contracts and supervised the works to place large sand bags on the sea bed to repair this damage.
I also initiated a programme of compiling quayside wall as built information and designs in order to better inform this assessment and target remediation works more effectively.

March 2018 – January 2019 Berth 35 Water Main £150k
An existing water main suspended under a quayside required replacement.
I carried out the initial feasibility studies and noted the close interdependency between the proposed project scope and other quayside infrastructure, compliance and safety issues. I developed the scope and design to incorporate ladders and openings in the quayside and produced a design addressing all the infrastructure issues on the berth at the same time. I communicated the designs and obtained the endorsement of a wide number of operational stakeholders. I invited tenders, administered the contracts and delivered the completed project.

April 2017 – June 2018 BMW Vehicle Storage Requirements £1.5 M
BMW required some additional processes and efficiency measures implemented in their vehicle import operation which was based in two Multi Deck Vehicle Storage Facilities (MDVSF). The works consisted of the construction of two booths used for automatic vehicle image capture and a spray booth facility, together with other work areas and changes to services and traffic management layouts.
I worked with the ABP management team to develop the design and scope, develop the business case and estimate the costs, invited tenders, administered the contracts, delivered the completed project and handed over the project to the customer. As multi user areas I implemented and carefully developed changes so that the safety and efficiency of other operations was not affected detrimentally.

September 2014 – March 2016 Pathfinder House Pre-Delivery Inspection Centre £900k
An existing warehouse and office building needed to be repurposed as a pre-delivery inspection (PDI) facility for BMW vehicles being transported through Southampton Docks.
I developed the design and scope to meet the operational requirements of the PDI process safely and efficiently. I worked with the ABP management team to develop the business case and estimate the costs, invited tenders, administered the contracts, delivered the completed project and handed over the project to the customer.

January 2014 – September 2014 Western Avenue Junction Improvements £220k
Safety concerns had been raised by users of a busy junction on the port estate.
I carried out a risk based design study and developed the junction design to include many of the latest highway design guidance recommendations and design principles targeted at improved driving behaviour. I estimated the costs and presented the business case, invited tenders and administered the contracts to deliver new signage and provision of off road cycle ways, pedestrian walkways and road crossing refuges.

October 2013 – July 2014 Mayflower Cruise Terminal Baggage Handling £560k
The purpose of this project was to improve the resilience and capacity of the baggage handling facilities at an existing cruise terminal and involved the removal of the existing baggage handling and x-ray facilities to allow four separate enclosures and sets of facilities to be constructed.
I worked with the ABP management team to develop the design and scope, develop the business case and estimate the costs, invited tenders, administered the contracts, delivered the completed project and handed over the project to the customer.

January 2013 – July 2015 Extension to Gate 20 Warehouse £4.5M
A project to extend the existing warehouse of 15,000 sq.m by a further 6,000 sq.m. to meet the needs of the current tenant business. The project also included a significant Solar Photo Voltaic (PV) system
I worked with the customer and ABP management team to develop the design and scope, develop the business case and estimate the costs, invited tenders, administered the contracts, delivered the completed project and handed over the project to the customer. The completed project was assessed by BRE and awarded an “Excellent” status. This was a notable achievement and is recognised with a case study on the BREEAM website.
